Permanent residents have the opportunity to apply for citizenship through a process called naturalization. Legal permanent residents who have lived in the United States for at least five years may qualify for naturalization so long as they meet certain requirements. Individuals who have established legal permanent residence for less than five but more than three years may still qualify for naturalization if they are married to a U.S. citizen. Subject to some exceptions, applicants must be able to read, write, and speak basic English and must pass a test on U.S. history and civics. Applicants must also show that they have not been out of the United States for more than a total of 30 months during the last five years and have not taken a single trip outside the United States that lasted a year or more. To apply for citizenship in New York or any other state, you must also have lived in that state for at least three months.
